SILVER SALMON - VALDEZ ALASKA 2005
In August 2005, my brother,
Matt DeGroot, came to Alaska so that he could fish for silvers with me and Darin
in Valdez. I was so excited to see him as I hadn't seen him in almost two
years. The entire time we were in Valdez, the weather was absolutely beautiful;
not a cloud in the sky and the water was like glass. Matt didn't believe me when
I told him that it was the first time I had ever been to Valdez when it hadn't
been raining. He gave me a bad time and told me that rain in Valdez was just a
figment of my imagination. ..if only he knew. We had a very successful time
catching silvers and we limited out the boat each day. It was a blast. Although
the weather was perfect, the last couple of days we were there, a very strange
fog rolled through in one long line. It was so thick you couldn't see the other
boats around you, but if you drove 50 yards, you were out of the fog and could
see forever. It was eery looking at it from across the bay, something that might
be described in a Stephen King book. It only came through in the late afternoons
- very strange. I have to say that we had a great time fishing. You can't put a
price on the feeling you get when you hear the words "fish on". Getting the
opportunity to spend time with both my brother and with Darin in Valdez is a
memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
